What is Zakat?
Zakat, one of the Five Pillars of Islam meaning “purification,” is charitable giving to support the poor and those in need. While it can be given year-round, it holds special significance during Ramadan, helping deliver timely, lifesaving support that reflects the month’s values of empathy, generosity, and unity.
How is Zakat Calculated?
Zakat is 2.5% of accumulated wealth, including savings, investments, gold, silver, and nonessential property. It’s due if total wealth exceeds the nisab (85g gold or 595g silver) after deducting debts and immediate liabilities. Wealth must be held for a full lunar year. Trusted online resources and calculators can help ensure accurate Zakat calculation.
Do Zakat Practices Vary by Country?
The practice of Zakat differs in various countries, with some governments collecting and distributing it. In other countries, Muslims have more flexibility and can choose how they wish to engage in Zakat themselves, like donating to their local mosque, a community organization, Muslim associations, and other charitable organisations.
Who Receives Zakat?
Zakat is given to the eight categories mentioned in the Quran: the poor, the needy, those who administer it, those drawn to faith, freeing slaves, debtors, in Allah’s cause, and needy travelers. This is a divine obligation. {التوبة 60} (Al-Touba 60)
